Town of Boston, New York
Nestled in the heart of Erie County, just southeast of Buffalo, the Town of Boston is a vibrant community with deep historical roots and small-town charm. As one of the county’s beloved “Southtowns,” Boston offers a peaceful, rural atmosphere while remaining close to the amenities of Western New York’s urban centers.
With a population of 7,948 as of the 2020 census, Boston combines scenic beauty with a strong sense of community. Our town traces its history back to 1804, when brothers Charles and Oliver Johnson became the area’s first settlers. Formally established on April 5, 1817, Boston has grown from humble beginnings into a place that values heritage, family, and neighborly spirit.
The town's legacy can be discovered throughout the community — from the founding of the first Christian church, the Free Will Baptist Church around 1811, to stories etched in stone at the historic Maplewood Cemetery across from the Boston Town Hall. These gravestones mark the resting place of some of the town’s earliest settlers and even tell tales of historic events like the infamous “Love” murder.
We welcome you to explore our history, enjoy our natural beauty, and become a part of our ongoing story. Whether you're visiting or planting roots, there's a place for you in Boston, New York!
